About Indian Institute of Management
The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are a group of 20 public, autonomous institutes of management education and research in India. They primarily offer postgraduate, doctoral and executive education programs. The establishment of IIMs was initiated by Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, based on the recommendation of the Planning Commission.
IIMs are registered as societies under the Indian Societies Registration Act. Each IIM is autonomous and exercises independent control over its day-to-day operations. However, the administration of all IIMs and the overall strategy of IIMs is overseen by the IIM council. The IIM Council is headed by India’s Minister of Human Resource Development and consists of the chairpersons and directors of all IIMs and senior officials from the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India. Business schools are colleges or institutes, which are conducting courses on business administration and management. These are either autonomous or would have affiliated to a university. The prominence of a business school is purely based on the quality of education, faculty, campus placement facility etc. The top business schools in the country such as IIMs and ISB are always making headlines with campus placement and salary offers. Common Admission Test (commonly known as CAT) is an entrance test for admissions to premier B-schools in India. It is conducted by IIMs.
- The exam is divided into three major sections:
- Quantitative Aptitude
- Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning
- Verbal Ability

CAT 2018 Exam Pattern
There are 3 sections in the test
- Verbal and Reading Comprehension (VARC)
- Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DI & LR)
- Quantitative Ability (QA)
The Quantitative Ability and Verbal& Reading Comprehension sections consist of 34 questions, whereas the Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning section has 32 questions. Along with the objective type questions, there are some non-multiple choice questions in each section. Candidates have to answer in the space provided to them.
The total duration of the test is 180 minutes or 3 hours. However, each section of the test has a time limit of 1 hour each. The test takers cannot switch between the sections and have to attend the test in a particular order. The order of the sections is-
- VARC
- DI & LR, and
- QA
As per the marking scheme, each question carries 3 marks and there is negative marking of 1 mark for each wrong answer. There is no negative marking for the non-multiple choice questions.
CAT 2018 Registration Eligibility
Every Candidate applying for CAT must check Eligibility initially. The Candidate should meet all the criteria so that he might in a position to apply for the exam. Here we provide you with all the eligibility requirements.
- Candidate must be a citizen of India.
- Candidate must complete Bachelors Degree in any discipline from a recognized board.
- Candidates appearing for the exam may also apply.
- Candidates must have at least 50% of general category and 45% for the reserved category in the qualifying exam.
- CS/CA/ICWA candidates may also apply.
CAT 2018 FEE Structure
- Application fee can be paid via credit card/debit card/net banking.
- Application fee for general category is Rs: 1700/-
- Application fee for reserved category is Rs: 850/-
